The first evidence may be a drop on the floor, burning smell after a drive, smoke near the exhaust, oil-level message or residue found during service. A leaking engine can also stay dry on the ground because the undertray retains the oil.
Potential source areas vary by engine
Possible sources include cam/valve covers, front covers, oil-filter or cooler housings, vacuum-pump areas, turbocharger oil lines, crank seals and the sump. This is not a parts list: the exact engine layout and fresh leak path determine which areas are relevant.
Engine oil, transmission fluid and hydraulic fluid look similar when dirty
Fluid colour and location offer clues, but road dirt and heat can change appearance. The source system should be identified before the level, fluid specification and repair plan are decided.
Why a small leak can still matter
A slow seep may remain stable, but oil reaching an exhaust component can smoke or create fire risk, and oil reaching belts or rubber mounts can cause secondary damage. A sudden leak or low-pressure warning is a different, urgent condition.

Stop immediately for a red oil-pressure warning, rapid loss, smoke from oil on hot exhaust parts or a level below the safe range. A minor damp area with correct level may allow a short trip for diagnosis, but monitor the warning system and do not rely on repeated top-ups as a repair.
